The recent 2013 Salmon Masters Tournament in Haida Gwai is over, but the participants are still rocking back and forth due to the extremely rough weather. However, the fishing was excellent and the friendships, old and new, remain as strong as ever.
The Salmon Masters Tournament takes place annually in Haida Gwai on BC's West coast. This year, the three lodges taking part were Hippa Lodge, Englefield Bay and Whale Channel. In addition to handing out over $360,000 in cash prizes, the tournament raises money for Prostate Cancer Foundation BC and the Pacific Salmon Foundation.
Darren Hokanson, Switch President & CEO, and Aaron Hokanson, Switch Director of Corporate Communications, participated in the tournament and managed to place in the money (4th for the day on the 2nd day with a 33.1 lb. spring salmon). Enduring large seas and cold weather/rain, the anglers toughed it out and caught their limit during intense fishing on the last two days.
Brad Torry, a long-time Salmon Masters participant, took top prize with a 46.2 lb. chinook and gave Hippa Lodge its first tournament champion.
Switch sponsored the tournament and looks forward to returning in 2014!
